Percent Oxygen Analyzer for Natural Gas

OxyScout Percent is an optical oxygen analyzer for continuous percent-level O₂ measurement in natural gas, with user-selected ranges of 0–1, 0–10 or 0–21 %vol*. OxyScout Percent has no electrochemical cell to replace and no cross-sensitivity to H₂S or CO₂.

What is a percent oxygen analyzer?

A percent oxygen analyzer reports oxygen in percent by volume (%vol) rather than parts per million. One percent by volume equals 10,000 ppm, and ambient air is about 20.9% oxygen. OxyScout Percent is the high-level and air-range model in the OxyScout line, and the reading goes out over 4–20 mA and RS-485 Modbus RTU at the same time. Percent applications include tank blanketing.

What are the OxyScout Percent specifications?

Measuring range*0–1, 0–10 or 0–21 %vol O₂. The user selects the range.
Detection limit*0.005% O₂ (50 ppm)
Accuracy*Typically ±2% of reading or ±0.01% O₂ (100 ppm), whichever is greater
Resolution*0.002% O₂ at 0.2% O₂
Typical applicationHigh-level and air-range service, including tank blanketing

*Based on controlled lab conditions.

Which percent range fits the application?

Choose a range that puts your oxygen limit well inside the scale, with enough headroom above the limit to see an upset rather than a pegged signal.

Your oxygen limitOxyScout range to considerWhy
0.1 % to 0.4 %Percent, 0–1 %vol*The limit sits inside the scale, and the range can follow a larger air leak without saturating.
Upset tracking above 1 %Percent, 0–10 %vol* or 0–21 %vol*These ranges follow large air ingress events up to air itself.

*Based on controlled lab conditions.

For limits in ppm, see the trace oxygen analyzers. The pipeline oxygen limits guide lists published limits with sources.

The 4–20 mA end points can be changed in ScoutView, the configuration software that ships with every analyzer. ScoutView does not change the Modbus register scaling or units, so the PLC or DCS scaling has to be updated separately.

What other specifications apply?

OxyScout Percent shares the installation, wiring, firmware and communications of the full OxyScout line. The full specification table also covers options and accessories.

MeasurementThe analyzer uses a fully optical O₂ sensor, so there are no electrochemical cells to replace.
OutputsThe outputs are a 4–20 mA loop (current sink) and RS-485 Modbus RTU (2-wire half-duplex).
PowerThe analyzer runs on 9–36 VDC and draws 35 mA plus the current used by its analog outputs.
Process / ambient temperatureProcess and ambient temperature is 0 to 50 °C, and storage temperature is −20 to 70 °C.
PressureUp to 250 PSI input pressure†
Humidity / flowThe analyzer is specified for non-condensing conditions, and it has no flow restrictions.
Area classificationThe analyzer is engineered for Class 1 Division 2 (Zone 2) hazardous areas.
Size / weightThe enclosure is 9 in high, 7 in wide and 2.5 in deep, and the analyzer weighs 4 lb.
Process connectionThe process connection is 1/8 in tube compression.
Response time*Typical response time is under 10 seconds.

*Based on controlled lab conditions. Standard Sensors Corporation reserves the right to make revisions and/or changes without notice.

†Without Flowmeter installed. Higher ratings if regulator installed upstream.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which percent range should I choose?

Choose a range that puts your limit well inside the scale. A limit of 0.1 % to 0.4 % sits inside the 0–1 %vol range, and the 0–10 % and 0–21 %vol ranges follow large air ingress events up to air itself.

What is the detection limit of OxyScout Percent?

The detection limit of OxyScout Percent is 0.005% O₂ (50 ppm), and resolution is 0.002% O₂ at 0.2% O₂.* *Based on controlled lab conditions.

Does H₂S or CO₂ in the gas affect the reading?

OxyScout has no cross-sensitivity or poisoning from H₂S, CO₂ or the other gases that plague galvanic cells.
